Yafet Askale was sprayed with ultra violet dye, which is invisible to the naked eye, after he broke into a "trap car" set up by police.
The vehicle had been fitted with a traceable liquid called SmartWater.
As the 28-year-old stole items from the vehicle, including a laptop, he activated a system which sprayed him with the substance.
It also alerted police that the car had been broken into.
Askale had denied breaking into the car in north west London but ultra violet lights showed him covered in the spray.
Releasing the images as a warning Detective Inspector Madeline Ryder, of Brent Police, said: "This is another excellent example of the thorough work completed by Brent Officers. Using the trap car technology we were able to charge Askale and put him before the courts.
"The trap car forms part of an overall crime reduction strategy designed by SmartWater which is an effective weapon in the armoury of tools that we routinely use in Brent. We will continue to target those who are insistent on committing these types of offence.
"Brent Police say very clearly to any would be thieves - Don't come to Brent - our trap cars and trap houses are waiting for you."
Askale, of Harlesden Gardens, Harlesden, was sentenced to a community order for 49 hours and ordered to pay £400 costs at Brent Magistrates' Court for theft from motor vehicle.
The trap car with SmartWater was set up near his home when he targeted it in June.
The suspect was found to be in possession of the stolen property and arrested. He denied theft but was found guilty.
Brent Police have recently been working with SmartWater using trap cars and houses equipped with technology to deter thieves from committing crime and to catch those that do.
Residents have also been provided with free kits to mark valuable property with the substance within their homes which has led to reductions in burglary and street robbery and 80 and 40 percent respectively.
Three different traceable liquids are currently being trialled across London by police to prevent burglary, theft, robbery and vehicle related crime.
The others are called Applied DNA Sciences and Stealth Mark.

The condition went undetected for 20 years meaning he spent years being 'drunk' after eating highly starchy or sugary foods - even when he was at primary school.
He is unable to hold down a job, and has to stick to a very strict diet as even a small portion of rice makes him feel like he has drunk three bottles of wine.
Mr Hogg, from Middlesbrough, said: "Every time I eat bread, potatoes or starchy rice I produce 100 per cent proof drinking alcohol that travels around my body through my bloodstream - if I eat a portion of rice I would suffer a hangover equivalent of having glugged three bottles of red wine the night before.
"I have experienced symptoms from birth and during my childhood there were countless times I suffered 'drunkenness' without having consumed an alcoholic beverage.
"I was a stubborn teenager and wanted a normal life so I insisted on partying and drinking and after sailing through my GCSEs I had to scrape through my A-Levels to go to university.
"But soon after starting I dropped out - I had noticed I was getting drunk more easily and was suffering severe hangovers after most meals.
"Drinking alcohol is now a big no - I already have my own personal brewery and the body was not designed to handle even more alcohol.
"Plus why pay someone else when I can make my own special brew."

A Chinese zoo ridiculed for passing off a shaggy dog as a lion has shut down temporarily for "rectification", media reported Friday.
The zoo's supposed "African lion" was exposed as a fraud when the dog used as a substitute -- a Tibetan Mastiff -- started barking, the state-run Beijing Youth Daily had reported earlier.
The zoo, in central China's Henan province, has "altered several misnamed animal signs," the Beijing Times reported, adding that zoo officials have issued a public apology and "closed for rectification".
Three other species housed incorrectly in the zoo reportedly included: two coypu rodents in a snake's cage, a white fox in a leopard's den, and another dog in a wolf pen.
A photograph of a dog sitting in a cage in front of a sign reading "African lion" drew ridicule on Chinese social media services, with one user saying: "They should at least use a husky to pretend to be a wolf".
The Tibetan Mastiff is a large and hairy dog breed.
Authorities in the park in the city of Luohe, where the zoo was located, said that the facility had been contracted out to a private zookeeper since 1998.
